Enemies of Saturn
2009-10-03

Bursting onto the scene in late 2007, Enemies of Saturn has definitely come into its own with regards to the live band scene.  Hard rock.  Funk.  Alternative.  EOS has mastered their sound and has constantly honed their already extremely tight set.  Founded by former members of the band ‘Pinas’: Louis Isok, Miko Santaromana, and Dennis Sy only had to knock on the door of then 19 year-old drum phenom Fred Sison, Isok’s high school buddy.  Together they quickly fused a hard and melodic sound fans have come to identify with EOS.

Isok’s rock guitar riffs seamlessly drive straight to the point while unconcealing an intimate knowledge of metal, alternative and even hip-hop. Dennis Sy’s strolling bass lines perfectly match up with Fred’s agile drumming and creative use of silence.  And Miko’s vocals are forcefully sincere, paying homage to Brandon Boyd (Incubus) and Bamboo.

Industry insiders have hailed this independent band’s potential.  Following their first radio single ‘Bigayan’ on the premier Philippine rock station NU107, they eagerly await more and more proof of this band’s reputation.  It’s really only a matter of time before EOS steps onto the big stage.  No frills. Just four guys, a deep love for music, and some raunchy rock and roll magic taking place on the stage.

Finishing production on a full length album at Kerplunk! Studios; being produced by well-respected recording engineer Pat Jalbuena (Kjwan), and Angulo guitarist Lio Valiao.

Misc Q&A's

Tell us the story behind your band name.

Louis: we did not really give importance to what we would call ourselves for the reason that we were more about what the music had to say and impart. Evidently, we still had to think of a "brand" so to speak for the music we share so Voila! Enemies of Saturn was spawned.

Fred: Don't remember. Ask Miko or Dennis. Hahaha.

Dennis: I don't remember exactly how we came up with it, I think it was Miko (our singer) who suggested the name; we had like four or five to choose from and eventually decided to go with Enemies of Saturn.

Miko: To echo what Louis said, we did not really give too much importance in coming up with a band name. It was just a random spitting of words. We did not think too much about the meaning of our suggestions. This is just what we ultimately chose. Eventually, I tried searching for a meaning behind it out of curiosity and I stumbled upon an astrological article that says that the sun and saturn are ultimate enemies. The sun represents truth, knowledge and light while Saturn represents our false shelter.

How was the band formed?

Louis: One great thing about our band is we were friends first before musicians. Drawn from the same interests and contexts of life, trips, and music it was an automatic thing for us to come together and write what we authentically dig.

Fred: Drinking and Jamming at my place, December 30, 2006.

Dennis: If I remember correctly it was sometime around December of 2006.  I got a call from Louis if I was available to jam with Fred.  Since we were bandmates before and I knew Fred because he used to session drums with our old band I said yeah. Weeks passed and we had like five instrumental songs and we needed a singer, so we called Miko who was the singer of our old band also. It took us like another couple of months or so of intense practice and writing to get everything right.

Miko: We were all friends before the band started. We all met randomly and that's another story for another day. As far as i remember, it started early 2007 when Dennis, Fred and Louis were looking for a vocalist for a band that they already started on December 2006. That's when I came in to fill that void. I remember Nazi Jamming Sessions at 9AM every Saturday, Half drunk from the night before hahaha! bittersweet!

How long have you guys been together?

Louis: if my memory serves me right, around 2 years? 2.5? not really sure.. all i vividly know is that its fuckin fun!

Fred:  2 Years

Dennis: We’ve been friends around 5 years now, coz some of us knew each other since high school like Louis and Fred, I knew Miko since '04 and Louis and Fred around '05. Time flies.

Miko: I believe we've been together for more than 2 years now.

How would you describe your music to someone who's never heard it before?

Louis: hahahaha most people tend to answer " you know your music is rock mixed with fusion plus a pint of jazz yada yada yada blah blah"! well we collectively agree that our music is an experience. its like coming from a session of good sex! haha

Fred: Up your ass.

Dennis: Umm.. I would describe it as a soundtrack during one of those "car chase scene" in Taken, or an entrance song in a Boxing or MMA match..not really as accurate but it's as close as i can describe it.

Miko: a 2x4 smacked right on the side of your face

Describe your band using other musical acts (example, Lady Gaga meets The Beatles)

Louis: i dont know about the other fellas but in my interpretation its like Marvin Gaye meets Sevendust or Erykah Baduh meeting Pantera

Fred: Spongecola meets Cueshe

Dennis: Audioslave meets The Lost Prophets.

Miko: Red Hot Chili Peppers trading blows with RATM and the Foo Fighters, FREE FOR ALL haha That's just me. hehe

Where do you usually play?

Louis: All around the Bars here in the metro like Saguijo Cafe, 19east, and recently just in the Mall of Asia grounds w/ Bamboo. that was a real good night. lotsa effin" JAGER!!

Fred: Saguijo, 6Underground, Mag:net Highstreet, Route 196, Al's Bar.

Dennis: We usually play in Saguijo, Route196, Mag:net Highstreet, Al's bar.Great venues by the way!(wink wink).

Miko: Usual indie production gigs in Saguijo, Route 196, Magnet Fort, Al's Bar, and the like

Tell us about your original songs.

Louis: all of the songs we wrote were well thought of and importantly cooked

to our specific liking. that equals SWAGGA!!

Fred: Musical mania fused by Testosterone and Alcohol.

Dennis: our songs have different stories. It's basically about experiences before and present situations. Some are "what ifs" and "weird situations" that I can't disclose.

Miko: Different stories told in different perspectives. Topics are as random as Sex, Paranoia, the thrills and spills of life taken from our own experiences and other people as well.

Do you have albums, singles, eps, mp3s out? Where can people get them?

Fred: Yeah we currently have Bigayan out as our first single. Go vote for it!! Text NUVOTE Bigayan and send to 29107. We also have Facebook, Multiply and Myspace accounts.

Dennis: We have a single out called Bigayan which we released last December 08 on NU107. Right now we're still in the process of recording our songs for our 1st album. We don't exactly know  when the release date will be yet, but it's gonna be out soon.

Miko: We released our first single on December of 2008. It's called "Bigayan". We released it on NU 107.5 and i believe people can still vote for it. We are currently on the final stages of finishing our debut album, being recorded at Kerplunk Studios in Makati under master sound engineer Pat Jalbuena. Hopefully we'll release the album by the end of the year then we'll tell you where you can get a copy. For now, watch the gigs. :)

Favorite covers:

Louis: Bulls on Parade by Rage against the Machine

Fred: None

Dennis: Personally I like to play Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye or Isley Brothers and some Allman Brothers band songs but we hardly do covers and if we do it's usually during soundchecks.

Miko: Well we usually do only one during gigs - Bulls on Parade by RATM. We just use it for soundcheck though so never finish the song hehe

What song would you never play?

Louis: anything from Cueshe or Chicosci

Fred: None

Dennis:  We'll play anything actually, but we can't pull off Until you suffer some ( Fire and Ice) by Poison and Here I go again on my own by White Snake. Then again maybe we could try one of these days complete with the "Hair Metal" get-up costume. Probably on Holloween watch out for it!

Miko: No comment hahaha!

Why should people listen to you play?

Louis: the music we share to people comes from the purest of intentions and that is to, at least in our recognition, deliver something tasteful aurally and also, especially in gigs, make the whole thing as a memorable experience of what we deem as cool vibes plus its really heavy ahahaha.

Fred: We make your heads fuckin' bob and we make you grind your teeth.

Dennis: We always bring intensity and tightness in our set and our audience feels every second of it. I think its an awesome thing that the people who hav'nt seen us or heard of us need to experience.

Miko: because people have the right to party.

Where can people hear more of your music? Where can they watch you play?

Miko: For more info about our music and where we play you can check our social networking sites such as myspace, multiply, odysseylive.net and facebook. Anyone's welcome to add us in any of the sites mentioned. You'll be able to see our gig scheds there.
