COVER STORY: Nanay Mo Aims To Give Hard Rock a Shot in the Arm

Nanay Mo

Before we start gushing about Nanay Mo, let’s get this out of the way for a second: Nanay Mo are not reinventing the wheel. Their brand of hard rock is something that you may have heard a dozen times before. But the thing that makes Nanay Mo special is that they do it so well. It’s even more refreshing that they’re a relatively young band playing a style of music that’s devoid of pretensions. They did not set out to be a “cool” band… with Nanay Mo, “coolness” is just inherent. And that is why we love them.

The band is currently comprised of vocalist Jong Cardenas, guitarists Gio Puyat and Anjo Jaoquin, bassist Anton Magno, and drummer Nash Ignacio. The band got its start when they started jamming at Ateneo High School, but they only became a full-fledged band when they officially formed in college for their first “audition gig” at Mag:net Katipunan. A couple of line-up changes and an album later, and now they’re back with their new release, “Medyo Wakwak”.

Known as a hard-working band in and out of the studio, Nanay Mo has built a pretty solid fanbase with their live performances. They have played in countless festivals including Rock the Riles and Fete De La Musique, as well as out of town shows in Cagayan De Oro, Baguio, and more recently, Cebu.

As evidenced by their band name, they’re also pretty irreverent. It’s this irreverence that is often associated with their youth. In a way, they are pretty much keeping pinoy hard rock alive with their youthfulness and their capacity to keep things interesting with their sheer talent.

With Nanay Mo, hard rock is in good hands.

For the month of August, we will be having Nanay Mo as our featured artist. We’ll be reviewing their debut record as well as their recent release, “Medyo Wakwak”. Expect more features on Nanay Mo for the rest of the month!
